I have. In my daughter. She is one of the most Spirit filled children I have ever met. She loves God, with all her heart, and is such an amazing testament of His love. She may not know it, but she is a wonderful example to me of how a believer should live and love.
Last year, she attended her very first concert. It was hosted by our church and she got to see a number of Christian bands perform. The smile has yet to fade from her eyes! She had a BLAST!!! Some of the artists signed her arm after the concert and I snapped a pic of her when she got home, which was the pic I used for this layout.

This layout came together quickly! I began with a piece of patterned paper for the background and layered a piece of black cardstock on top. I wanted to bring in the colors from my daughter's shirt so I added some bright colored banner pieces then mounted her photo on coordinating cardstock. The title is a mixture of some alpha stickers and the Want2Scrap Faith Fancy Chipboard Word. I simply colored the chipboard with my metallic silver Sharpie! Next, I did some hand journaling on a kraft tag and adhered it next to the photo. I finished the layout off by adding a few sticker embellishments and sprinkled some Want2Scrap Pink Enamel Dots and Want2Scrap Silver Baby Bling.
Here's a closer view of some of the details...
Sometimes I really feel like I'm on target with it and other times, well, not so much. This year, my OLW is Joy! I have come to realize that joy is a choice and I can choose it every. single. day. regardless of my circumstances. I believe that my joy is found in the Lord and I can either let my circumstances stress me out and bring me down or I can choose to look to the Lord and find joy, even in my strugglesTh This is exactly what I am going to do this year.

Here's a layout I created that I will add to my focus board for this year.

I had a lot of fun creating this layout! I knew I wanted to add some color and I really wanted to be playful with this layout so I chose to use my Silhouette to cut my OLW out, repeatedly, then I used the negative instead of the words I cut out. I spritzed a piece of white cardstock with 3 different shades of Glimmer Mist and dried it quickly with my heat tool, then I glued my negative right on top of it. I layered up using a plain cardstock for the base, then the diagonal paper, which is from a digital pack I purchased on Etsy. Next I added my photos. The 2016 was also cut with my Silhouette from the same paper as my background. I added a OLW flair button from {A Flair for Buttons} and a few Want2Scrap Enamel Dots.

Do you choose a word for the year?
That is seriously my favorite store to shop in! In fact, many of the organizational pieces and furniture pieces came from Ikea. During one trip, I ran across the Raskog Utility Cart. I loved the color and thought surely I could put it to use, but the cheapskate in side of me told me to hold off, so I did.

After I had seen the cart in the store I began seeing it all over Pinterest. Crafters everywhere were using it to store everything from stamps to pictures to Project Lift. Well, in late 2014 I was in Sam's Club and low and behold I see a cart strikingly similar to Ikea's Raskog AND the price was about 1/2! So, I couldn't resist and I purchased that cart!

Now, before I get into the details of what my cart houses, I will tell you this cart stays packed ALL THE TIME!!! I have a mini van and it fits perfectly in the very back so it's actually really easy to transport! But having these items already organized and at hand really helps to streamline not just my packing but also my cropping!

I use it to house my Project Life stuff along with punches, little embellies and stickers/rub-ons. Here's a look at the entire cart...

As you can see, it's pretty full! Now, let's take a look at each tier individually. Here's the top tray...

Thankfully I was able to find a few baskets and even a wire mail sorter that all fit perfectly in this tray together! In the back, I have my Want2Scrap chipboard alphas, Thickers and long stickers. On the front left, I have a divided basket and in the front I have words/phrases, middle is alpha stickers and back is rub-ons. Then, in the basket on the right I have mini paper pads, larger embellishments and Project Life type cards and things. As my collection of PL style items continues to grow, I will most likely move the cards and such into a larger storage system and incorporate ALL my PL cards together. But, since my PL stash is still relatively small, I can still sort it all this way. And lastly, on this top tier, on the far right of the tray I have some glassine bags. These are filled with the Swag Bags from Paper Issues. I kept each month together and can just skim through them if I'm looking for something to add to a project.

I also grabbed some of the plastic hanging organizers from Ikea. These go with the rail systems but I found that they hang on the side of the cart perfectly. And, they were only 99 cents each!

I have one cup for my Crop-o-Diles, one for sharpies and Wink of Stella pens, one for basic tools like scissors and piercer and ruler and such, and the last cup holds my labeler.

The second tier is where I have my Stampin' Up! Project Life cards and coordinating stamp sets, PL cardstocks and my We R PL card punches...

I like keeping my SU! stuff together for now, but again, as my PL collection continues to grow I may look at incorporating these with the rest.

And here's the last tray...

This tray has quite a bit of miscellaneous stuff in it. The black bin on the right (also from Ikea) has punches in it. Then there's my roller stamps and ink pad and wipes and then in the back there are two organizers...the smaller on in front with the jars inside holds my sequins and the larger one in the back holds open embellies like flair, clips and veneer pieces.

Well, there you have it. That's how I pack for a retreat! I also have my big Thirty One bag that holds my Silhouette, Ott Light and cords. Do any of you go to retreats? Do you have any other tips or tricks to packing for success cropping?
Katiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15711089936668006283noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3431120413237605405.post-87366017316643676662016-01-13T06:00:00.000-06:002016-01-13T06:00:12.006-06:00How I Pack for a Retreat : Step 2 - Creating Layout KitsThis week I'm sharing how I pack for a retreat. I feel that I have really found a system that works well for me and helps me to really stay focused and actually accomplish something when I'm at a retreat. In case you missed it, you can view my Step 1 HERE.

So now that I have my pages planned, I can go through my supplies and start packing for those pages. I purchased a few packs of page planners from Hobby Lobby. If I remember correctly, they are HL's Paper Studio brand. The inside is one large pocket that will fit 12x12 paper and stickers then there are some pockets on the outside as well. I also have some 2 gallon zip lock bags so when I run out of these I can use the zip locks as well.

After I review the sketch and/or photos I want to use, I began pulling the supplies from my stash. I will grab everything from paper to Want2Scrap Overlays, to embellishments...anything I think I might use on that particular project. Once I have it all gathered up, I put it all in the pocket and the pocket goes into my crop bag.

Sorry for the glare, but I wanted you to be able to see how it all fits together inside the pockets.

I know it sounds like it is time consuming, but it really isn't. Like I said, I do all the page planning in my free time like when I'm waiting at the doctors office, or cooking dinner...anytime I'm just playing around on my phone. Once I have the sketch and pic chosen, the rest is easy. :)

In addition to my planned pages, I take a SMALL variety of regular cardstock. I also throw in some extra patterned papers or collections just in case. Here's a peek inside my crop bag...

That's it, no rolling tote for me! This is the only bag of paper I take along. Planning the pages has really helped me pack what I need and not take everything I own with me!

Join me again on Friday for the 3rd and final pieces I pack to take with me! See you then!
At that time I did not have a dedicated scrapbook room so all of my stuff was stored in travel/rolling totes. Because of this, when I did attend a retreat I took EVERYTHING. More often than not I used 25% of my supplies, if even that.

In 2010 I quit my 8-5 job and began traveling with Scrap-Mart full time. On average I was gone 21 weekends a year for 5 years!! That's a LOT of travel. I loved it, however, due to the fact that I was gone half of the weekends a year for work I stopped going to retreats. I could not justify being gone from my family for another weekend, especially when it was just for fun.

In 2012 we completed our garage renovation. It became my home office/scrapbook room. Over the course of the next few years I perfected my storage solutions and tweaked things as my stash continued to grow. Because I worked from home when I wasn't on the road, I still didn't scrapbook near as much as I thought I would.

Fast forward to now, I have returned to a "regular" 8-5 office job and am no longer on the road. In 2015 I attended my first retreat in years. I spent weeks preparing and planning and packing. I have since attended two other retreats and feel I have perfected my packing for maximum scrapbook efficiency.

The first and most important thing I did was plan my pages. I began by browsing and pinning sketches and layouts I liked. I also took a screen shot of each sketch I intended to use. I have the Collect app on my phone so I would upload the sketch into Collect and add the pics I wanted to use for that particular sketch. I would also add any journaling or thoughts as well as what products I wanted to use, if I knew that at the time. Here's a peek at what my Collect calendar looked like at first glance...

I had 23 layouts planned before I ever packed a single thing! And, I did all of this in my "spare" time when I would have been playing on my phone anyway. This is something you can do on a regular basis so you always have a plan of something you can work on! Trust me, if you're like me and you are strapped for time but get the urge to scrap the last thing you wanna do is go sit at your desk and browse sketches and photos and try to decide what to do. If you keep a calendar of ideas going you can get right to work when you have the opportunity to sneak off for a few!

Join me again on Wednesday when I share how I pack and prepare to complete these pages!
Shelby, of course, chose a female Elf and named her Hazel Marie. Even now my daughter still believes in Hazel 100%. I really should have thought this through because it's exhausting. lol

Here's a layout I created with some of the pics of Hazel and her antics.

The Want2Scrap Elf Overlay helped this layout come together super quick! I printed one 4x6 and two 3x4 photos and adhered them into their places. Next, I sewed a pocket protector to create a snowy pocket and tucked it into the bottom left opening and added the Want2Scrap North Pole Sign. For the remaining opening, I added a Project Life 3x4 Grid Card then created Santa's belt with some black felt ribbon and a Want2Scrap Rectangle Ribbon Slide. Next, I colored a Want2Scrap Chipboard Speech Bubble with my red Wink of Stella Glitter Brush Pen and added some tiny alphas to read "naughty or nice".

In the pic below you can see some of the details of the snowy pocket I created.

I simply added in some white Flower Soft and chunky glitter before sewing the pocket closed! I LOVE how it turned out!

So, does your family have an Elf on the Shelf? What's the craziest thing your elf has done?
To be honest, I've never really been a basketball fan and I didn't know what to expect. But I have to say, I fell in love with the game pretty quick! This year he got to play for the school and every game I can see improvements in his technique and it is so exciting watching him grow!

Here's a layout I created with some of his pics from last year using the Want2Scrap Nothin' But Net Overlay.

One of the things I love most about Want2Scrap's overlays is that most of them come with a title already so all you have to do is add some pics and embellish! I printed off the pics with my Selphy printer, choosing a 4x6 for the top photo and 3x4 pics for the others. I left the white background sheet in place and added a piece of royal blue cardstock, our team colors, in between the two horizontal 3x4 photos and topped it off with a Want2Scrap Chevron Bling Strip. I seriously think the chevron bling is my number one fave! Using my Silhouette Cameo, I created a basketball border strip that would fit inside the rectangular opening under the title then cut the team name out of the same royal cardstock.

Here's a closer view of some of the details...
I really love how the basketball border worked out! Do your kids play sports? What's your favorite?
I hope you all had a fantastic Christmas and New Year! Obviously, I have taken some time off over the last year from blogging. In late 2014 I decided to leave Scrap-Mart and take a different direction. I was offered a position with a new company as an Office Manager. I will say it took me longer to get used to working 40+ hours a week again. But, I'm settled in and ready to get back to my crafting!

Here's a layout I created of Shelby at a retreat I attended back in November.

This layout came together rather quickly. I started with some layered pieces of Stampin Up! cardstock and added 2 3x4 pocket page cards and a pocket. Then, I printed the pic with my Selphy (my BEST purchase of 2015!!). The scallop border was actually created by using a 2" circle punch and trimming the circles down. I added some hand journaling, something I'm trying to incorporate more into my projects, and finished it off with a few sticker embellishments.

Here's a closer view of some of the detail...

I love the glitter on the top card! We had an unfortunate incident that ended up with my baby girl's head getting shaved. So I took her to get her ears pierced (again!) and this pic was taken just after she got them.

So, do you guys have any crafty resolutions for 2016? For me, I just want to create! Even though I remained on the design team for Want2Scrap last year I don't feel like I really got to create. So that is my goal. No specific numbers or projects. Just be crafty!
Especially when I finish a project. I was browsing Pinterest a while back and found THIS post about organizing scraps. Here is what my scrap bin looked like at the time...

And yes that is a layout WITH pics on it inside. Sigh. I am not a slob, I promise. lol It is just that sometimes, in the midst of work and kids and travel I just don't keep up with my scrap room the way I should! I immediately unloaded this bin and went to trimming, just like in the article. I trimmed all larger pieces to 6x6. And everything smaller than that went in the trash. Yes, the trash. I know, I could have saved it to make cards or die cut or whatever, but that is what got me in this situation to begin with. I happened to have a basket on hand like the ones she used in the post. So I pulled it out, cut down chipboard pieces for my dividers then used the SCRAPS and punches to cut tabs and color dots. Here's the finished product...

Isn't it beautiful?! You might be shocked to learn that this was done back in like April 2014 and as of today (November 30, 2014) it is still in tact and being used, properly! I have pulled some pieces out and used them, and I have added to it too. I have caved and kept smaller scraps of papers I really, really liked so that I can use them to make some cards. And I tucked all my Thickers and alpha stickers in the very back. This sits right on top of my embellishment drawers at my work space for easy access. Here's a closer view...
Everytime I cut a piece of 12x12 paper, I trim the scraps and add them to the basket. I have been guilty of leaving a pile and trimming after multiple projects. But, for now, I am happy that I have managed to keep this going for almost a year. My plan is to take a day and work through the scraps and make a bunch of cards up at once...basics like Thank You, Get Well, etc.

Do you have a special way to store your scraps?
I finally picked up a Printers Tray and dug out all the pics and would you believe that the pics sat in the tray on a shelf in my scrap room for TWO years before I actually completed the project?! I could make all kids of excuses for why it took so long, but I'll spare you that. I am happy to say that it IS now complete and I LOVE how it turned out! I had some patterned paper I purchased WAY back at Hobby Lobby. I cut them into 3x4 rectangles and decided placement of the paper and photos. Next, I gathered my embellishments. My sweet friend, Susie is on the design team for Paper House Productions. She introduced me to their products and sent me home with some to play with too! I absolutely LOVE their Canvas Stickers. In addition to having those to play with Susie also gave me a sheet of their Baseball Cardstock Stickers. I cut the Home Run, 28 and batter silhouette with my Making Memories Slice Machine and the Sports Design Card. I added a few of the Prima Sports Flair Badges that I had picked up from Nicole Petersen Designs at one of the shows I worked and a few Dress It Up Buttons I am sure I have had like forever! Here are a few closeups of the embellishments...
I did add some dimensional adhesive under the cardstock stickers in the center photo, but as you can see, the Canvas Stickers are very dimensional on their own. And here's one last peek...
It was really fun to receive the projects each month. You never knew exactly when they would arrive and it never failed to put a smile on my face when I opened the mailbox.

My last mail art project went to my dear friend Joyce. I wanted to make something special for her that she could hang or display in her craft room.

I started out with a chipboard shape from my stash, but you could easily use a page from one of Want2Scrap’s Chipboard albums…the Grand Album Series would work especially well for this project. I covered the chipboard piece with the polka dot side of Quick Quotes Dream Big patterned paper then I cut a 3.5″ wide strip of the striped side of Sheer Joy and adhered it to the center. Once the adhesive was set I trimmed the edges of the paper around the chipboard. Next, I chose my quote from the Sentiments Quote Bundle Pack and adhered it at a slight angle on the left side, leaving just enough room to add my Want2Scrap Frilly Flourish Swirl on the right. I added a mixture of green and pink Mulberry Paper Flowersto finish it off. Here’s a close-up view of the embellishments…

Joyce notified me that even though this was mailed by itself with NO envelope that it arrived safely to her in GA!

I envisioned am American Flag and perhaps even an eagle. Each month as we receive our projects, we would email the group to show them off. Well, I received an email and the beautiful project being shared was strikingly similar to the one I had planned. I didn't want to send a project that was too similar...even though just the basic idea was the same...so I thought and thought. Then, I decided to pay a little homage to my home state of Texas. Anyone who knows me knows that even though I left the great state at the of 19, and I am much older than that now ;), I still consider myself a Texan. Yes, I realize that everyone except fellow Texans think that is irrational, but that is besides the point. Anyway, on to the Mail Art...

As I did with all of the other folders, I began by covering the entire piece with Gesso by DecoArt and allowing it to completely dry. Then I pained the front of the folder with red, white and blue acrylic paint. I printed out the sheet music I found online and adhered it with Mod Podge. The little Texas stamp in the lower right corner was something I purchased over 2 years ago at a stamp show in Grapevine, TX. I was soooooo excited to have found it and still had not used it. So after stamping the image, I colored it with my Copics then fussy cut around the image and adhered it. Do you see the little bluebonnets? Those are the Texas State flower. They were created with Flower Soft and wire, a technique I learned at the stamp show when I purchased the stamps. The wagon wheel, boots and hat were cut with my Making Memories Slice machine...that 'ole thing is still kickin' and is one of my favorite tools to use still. Then I wrapped some twine into a lasso and looped it around the boots and added a twine bow to the Bluebonnets. I just painted the inside top of the folder white then stamped it with the barbed wire stamp (all the folders are sealed shut on the sides to create a pocket so we only needed to finish off the top visible section). Here's a peek at the back...
For the back, I used my DecoArt acrylic paints and simply painted the Lone Star Flag. I used my Spellbinders Stars Nestabilities to cut the star. I thought it would be fun to cut out our current states for the address labels. Please excuse the black spots, I snapped this pic after I had them addressed.

I absolutely LOVE the way this folder turned out. Even though it was extremely simple, it was one of my favorites that I made...was difficult to let go of. Come by on Friday to see the final Mail Art project...it is NOT a folder!!! ;)
With May comes the end of the school year, summer, and with summer comes vacation! While we don't have a real beach here in OK I couldn't help but think of the beach when I was conjuring up designs for June's project.

This mail art swap really brought out my desire to try new techniques and experiment with mixed media. This time, I started by painting my sky. I was trying to capture the sunset over the ocean. After getting the sky to an acceptable point, I moved onto the water. Before I painted, I added some DecoArt dimensional paste. After adding the blue paint, I added some white to the tops of some of the "waves" created with the paste to give a whitecap effect. For the sand, I adhered some Canvas Corp cork paper. I used an old Heidi Swapp stamp for the destination and the summertime and June are rubons. The sail boat, crab, sandcastle, umbrella and sandpail were all cut with my Making Memories Slice and the shells were leftover from a Button Farm sample kit. Here's a peek at the waves created with the dimensional paste...
The first thing I did was coat the entire outside of the file folder withDecoArt Gesso and allowed it to dry. I added some blue paint then some DecoArt Pink Glamour Dust. The pink glitter paint is very sheer so it adds a touch of color and a touch of glimmer! This time, I added patterned papers instead of painting the entire folder. So I chose my papers then tore them and using Mod Podge, I adhered them to the folder, then trimmed off the excess. Next, I picked bits and pieces of embellishments and fussy cut them from the paper. After adding the banner in the upper left corner I added a Beautiful Bling Strip WhitePearl/Black Rhinestones across the top. Using my Spellbinders Carnation Creations dies and my Grand Calibur, I die cut hot pink tissue paper and adhered multiple layers to create the flowers. Before adding the little banner strip on the journal piece, I tucked it through the smallest circle of the Nestabling Heart Circles Hot Pink Rhinestonecircle. My friend, Kay, taught me a fun little trick….I used bubble wrap and white paint to create the polka dots! So fun, right?! I finished the front of the folder off with some rub-ons for the word blossoms and May.

Here’s a peek at the back…

For the back, I decided to use all patterned paper. After I had them all adhered and trimmed, I finished it off with a large journal block, which I will use as my address label. A few small tissue paper flowers and theFrilly Flourish Swirl-White Pearl were added to complete the project. Both sides received a heavy dose of Mod Podge before it was ready to go. I learned that if you Mod Podge before you add the mailing labels and postage, that the recipient can easily remove them without damaging the project.

Have you heard of the new mail art trend? Some of my friends introduced me to it this year when I visited Indiana for a stamp show. Basically, you can mail almost anything. So, you take something different…like other than a card or envelope…alter it and mail it. Pretty simple. A group of us have joined together for a fun mail art swap and here is what my April recipient will find in her mail box…

I started with a plain old manilla file folder, covered it with someDecoArt Gesso then painted it very abstractly. I have to admit, my CAS brain has a hard time being this free, but it is also kinda fun. ;) While my Gesso and paint dried (don’t paint ’til your Gesso is completely dry!) I cut out my Easter eggs and the cute little bunny. I used my new Graphic 45 Sweet Sentiments 8×8 paper pad for the eggs, the added some Baby Bling pearls in White to the pink egg. It is crazy how popular selfies have become. I have to admit, I take selfies fairly often. My daughter loves to photo bomb me when she catches me. But, as often as I take them it is rare that I share them on social media. My hubby and I will text selfies back and forth sharing a simple smile or funny face but then they just sit in my camera roll. The #Selfies Overlay from Want2Scrap was a perfect way for me to document some of my favorite selfies.
I am also a CAS kinda girl. This particular card was hubby's Father's Day card this year...yes, I am that far behind on blogging!!

Anyway, here's the card...

After creating the simple, white card base I added a layer of teal grid patterned paper from the FarmHouse Paper Company 302 6×6 Paper Pad. Next, I trimmed a piece of white cardstock and embossed it using my Spellbinders Grand Calibur machine and adhered it to the teal layer then cut a coordinating piece of patterned paper and added that to the bottom. To help distract from the seam where the papers meet, I tied a bit of cord around the layers and closed it with a knot. Since the patterened paper has some neutral stripes, I decided to leave my chipboard Dad Fancy Chipboard raw, adhering it to the lower right corner. To finish the card off, I sprinkled some LeCreme 100 Count Baby Pearls around the chipboard and added a string of 3 along the top left hand corner.

What I love most about this card is that not only did it take about 10 minutes to create, you could easily adapt this layout to ANY theme. And, this is a great design to use when creating multiples!

I started with a piece of Fancy Pants Designs white corrugated card stock for my background. Then I took the patterned paper with all the strips and cut them all apart and rearranged them on my background, leaving just a little space between each one. I printed two of the same pic, one 4×6 and one smaller then mounted them both on the black paper that coordinates with the line. I was careful with the photo placement to ensure that the one quote would become the layout title. I added one of the mini file folders(because I am a sucker for office supplies!!) to the right of the photos. Using a combination of stickers and a pin tin and achipboard Speech Bubble, I added a sub-title for my layout. I added a white baby clothespin to help keep the folder closed. This is where I will journal. I added the Dream Fancy Chipboard Word, colored with my black Wink of Stella pen, to the left of my larger photo. I randomly chose two of the smaller paper strips and addedChevron bling border all the way across the layout. After tucking a sticker tab to the lower right hand corner and adding the year with stickers, I finished the layout off by sprinkling a few silver Baby Blingall around. After creating my card base, I cut the white layer using my Spellbinders A2 Matting Basics. Then, I simply cut a dozen or so hexagons from double-sided patterned paper, inked them and adhered them down the left side of card. A simple stamped thank you finished the card off. This would be a great card to make multiples of since they come together so quickly.

So, do you love the hexagon trend too?

And let me stay it again, it is sooooo easy to do with the help of Want2Scrap's Overlays! Here's a sneak peek of one I am sharing today on the Want2Scrap blog...

And with Overlays from Want2Scrap, it is not only easy but fun! Here is my most recent one...still need to add the pics, but I couldn't wait to share. :D

The Trick or Treat Overlay comes with a white background so I grabbed my Charcoal and Orange Glimmer Mist and created a subtle, misted background. Next, I grabbed some Halloween papers, die cuts and embellishments from my stash and set to work. To finish it off, I added some swirls from Donna Salazar's Build Your Own Bling and sprinkled a few Black Baby Bling Rhinestones around the page. Here's a closer view of the embellies...

So, I am curious...do you have a scrappin' goal each year?
